EDITORIAL: ‘Crime After Crime’ Explores if Crime and Consequence Are Passed Down

It is always a pleasure to witness Crime After Crime, a thrilling and inventive sketch comedy Noir. From the first uplighter flashlight on Nick Beige, the show moves seamlessly from the fifties to the seventies, the nineties, to the bright plastic glasses, moustache on fingers loving era, exploring the life and legacy of Nick Beige and the generational curses that persist.

Crime After Crime layers sketch comedy with Noir storytelling, activating the cinematic style for stage doused in suspense and humour. The morality of crime and the consequences of inheritance ripple through the decades, while the ensemble’s dynamic versatility brings every sketch to life. From the moment you enter the space, the playful world is alive: centre stage is a clothing rail chalk-filled with red cover-ups, formal suit jackets and plenty of ties, while stage left hosts the narrator’s cove, guiding the piece through cue tracks and inquisitive narration on the mic.

Julian Frid is captivating as Nick Beige, that damn smirk, the cool, confident clown at the center of the story. Seann Murray is the voice of reason, guiding us through decades of layered storytelling, while Conor Bradbury and Lowen Morrow brim with kinetic energy, embodying rain, wind, fighter jets, and twin duos in various combinations with whimiscial clarity. Costumes transform characters effortlessly, from fur lapel coats to blue corsages, amplifying drama with every movement. From placards to” say it how it is” lines, the ensemble perfectly weaves together the family drama and sets up the conditions for us to understand character motivations and how the choices of one generation jade the next.

Sound drives the atmosphere, from the classic noir soundscape rooting the world to the swelling of emotional music at cliffhangers or moments of vulnerability to upbeat jovial tracks to punctuate musical choreography. Blue washes and precise spotlights heightened suspense and pink accents and warm side lighting embraced sensuality. The minimal set gave room for the ensemble’s energy to fill every corner inventively, with the audience there for the whole ride like we’re the getaway driver.

Crime After Crime is a cohesive, exhilarating experience that keeps you on the edge of your seat.

Performances of Crime After Crime have now concluded at Toronto Sketch Comedy Festival 2026.
