Slim for Life is one of the craziest show concepts I have seen. While the concept and demographic are there, it falls into a trap where the niche goes a bit too far that the show itself isn’t one for everyone.
When heartbroken Lily joins her local Slimming World group to put herself first, the group turns into something much more sinister than she first expected; and it’s not just the weigh in gods they are preaching to. It is a ever relevant story of how far can someone go for the transformation of their dreams in the 21st century in the age of social media and body image propaganda everywhere you look.
The cast are great at what they do, built of both professional and ‘amateur’ actors from Birmingham, bringing a show up for the first time (so gotta rep the midlands there). It’s the story and the show itself that left me cringing with majority discomfort, even during the musical numbers. Sometimes you’re meant to, most of the time, not so much.
The ending twist felt forced and unexpected where pieces weren’t really adding together. The accidentally joining a cult plot has been done plenty of times and while this is an ok attempt for those who enjoy it, on this occasion this missed the mark with me.
Although this show itself wasn’t for me, you know I’ll still be checking out what these Midland performers get up to next as local theatre is the reason fringe happens. Support the ground up, build these artists so they can go on for more and your next favourite thing maybe on the horizon!
