Campy and comedic, Will Owen: Looking Fab at Fifty is a treat.
Will takes us through his life, his coming out, his fear of commitment and numerous mishaps. All with the goal in mind of looking fab at 50, having found happiness with a life partner and a tap that only does fizzy water.
One story I particularly enjoyed was that of his radio phone in to Michelle Visage, where a kind hearted attempt to thank his mother became an hilarious and embarrassing case of nerves and queer stereotyping. As someone who comes from a family background of working in Radio, I know stories like this well, and took delight in Will’s retelling.
Will’s crowd work was exceptional, dividing the audience into the “gays” and “straights” and using each community as reference points, asking the gay people how many straight people they knew, and asking the straight people what they do for fun, both facing hilarious reactions from the audience as a whole. Will asked me if I knew any straight people, to which I said “just one and I view him like a pet”. Will, I want you to know, his name is Callum.
The hour of comedy ended with a song parodying Bang Bang by Jessie J, solidifying Will’s ‘Bang Bang Vibe’ which had been joked about as a gay stereotype throughout the piece. This show was an amazing hour of comedy to unify the cultures of the gay and straight communities.
Recommended Drink: Pair this with Fizzy Water from your own built in tap!
