Inspired by the legend of forty maidens who chose death over slavery at the cliffs of the Black Sea coast, Legend of Kaliakra explores the hidden emotional lives of the women behind one of Bulgaria’s most enduring stories.
Blending poetic text and music, the production explores what remains unseen in history: the psychological and emotional worlds of the women behind the legend – their fears, guilt, love, courage, and confrontation with the oppressor. Four interconnected female perspectives reimagine a historical narrative as a story of choice, dignity, and freedom in one of the most disastrous periods in the Bulgarian history.
The play is directed by Elitsa Yovcheva, who has directed at the National Theatre Ivan Vazov and the Youth Theatre in Bulgaria.
The show premiered in Sofia in 2023 and has since toured cities along the Bulgarian Black Sea coast.
Making its London premiere at the VOILA! Festival, Legend of Kaliakra invites UK audiences to encounter an Eastern European story rarely represented on international stages and screens, enriching their cultural and historical perspective through the shared language of theatre, movement and music.
Performed in Bulgarian with English subtitles. The project is realised with the support of the Bulgarian Cultural Institute, London.
You can catch Legend of Kaliakra at The Cockpit on Saturday November 6th from 7pm & Sunday November 7th from 9pm (60mins). Tickets are available through the Voila! Theatre Festival Online Box Office.
