Casual Receptionist of the Quarter is a comedy solo show, delivered in the style of a workplace mockumentary. It follows Nic, a pathological people-pleasing gym receptionist as she becomes the face of Primary Fitness’ ‘International Women’s Day’ campaign, while juggling the impossible demands of members and management, in the casual side job that was meant to be temporary… ten years ago.
Full of customer service stories that sound too ridiculous to be true, but absolutely are (“that guy is washing his lettuce head in the changerooms again”) and contradictory corporate politics, it’s also about the quiet ache of a deferred dream, the invisible cost of keeping everyone else happy, and possibly a rogue musical number.
Inspired by over a decade of working at a commercial gym chain while pursuing a creative career, Casual Receptionist of the Quarter shines a light on the invisible emotional labour carried by the people who keep our workplaces running. It’s a celebration of the receptionists, retail workers, hospitality staff and customer service heroes who quietly hold everything together, often at the expense of themselves.
Whether you’ve worked in customer service or simply cared a little too much about a job you never meant to stay in, you’ll leave laughing, feeling seen, and hopefully a little kinder to yourself and the people around you.
