When my grandmother’s Alzheimer’s took her words away, she could no longer speak my name.
But she still held my hand.
She still remembered how to hum the lullabies she once sang me.
This show is for her — and for all the women whose stories were never told out loud.

Nüshu: Written for Her, on Her, by Her is a ritual performance born from memory, grief, and the unbreakable bond between women. It draws from Nüshu, the world’s only writing system made by and for women — once stitched into fans, woven into songs, and now, written on skin through movement, calligraphy, and breath.

This is the first Nüshu performance at the Edinburgh Fringe in ten years — a once-in-a-decade opportunity to witness a vanishing language return through the body.

I perform with dancers from China and Ukraine, surrounded by an original soundscape composed of real women’s voices from around the world — mothers, daughters, survivors. Some remembered. Some are forgotten.

Created by Creative Edinburgh Award-winner Jiayi Chen, this show was awarded Best Production Runner-Up at the 2024 Asian Arts Awards and Highly Commended by the Fringe’s Access, Diversity & Inclusion Awards.

Not just written for her — but on her, by her.
Let the wind carry her voice.
Once in ten years.
Once in a lifetime.

You can catch Nüshu: Written for Her, on Her, by Her from July 30th to August 10th at temple at C ARTS | C venues | C aquila from 13:55 (40mins). Tickets (£8 / £6 conc.) are available through the EdFringe Online Box Office.
