Join Lillie Langtry’s Celebration of Oscar Wilde’s Most Powerful Women.

In Wilde Women, the audience finds themselves transported to 1900 as backstage guests of Lillie Langtry, renowned British actress and close confidant of Oscar Wilde, after a performance at the Edinburgh Lyceum Theater. Desiring to rekindle her friendship with Wilde as well as generate a lucrative theatrical vehicle for herself, she awaits a telegram in response to her proposition that he join her to create a solo performance piece featuring the illustrious female characters from his plays—plays that set the stage for the era of the strong female protagonist and inspired other authors such as  August Strindberg, Anton Chekov and George Bernard Shaw.

In the meantime, Lillie light-heartedly reveals the details of her relationship with the iconic playwright, introduces the plays, and with the help of her visitors begins to sample the various dramatic roles from Cecily to Salomé—but will Oscar give his blessing for the project and collaborate with Lillie? Or is he too scarred by his recent incarceration for “gross indecency” to return to the Theatre?

While Oscar Wilde was famous for his prolific wit and flamboyant lifestyle, Lillie Langtry was an equally colorful celebrity with a scandalous history. Her affair with Prince Albert was hardly a secret, and her quick rise to international stardom, which actually began in Edinburgh, came at a deep personal cost. Wilde Women reunites their legacies and celebrates their contributions to strengthening women’s voices on the stage.

Catch Wilde Women from August 1st – 16th at Greenside @ George Street – Fern Studio from 14:00 (50mins). Tickets (£15/£10 conc.) are available through the EdFringe Online Box Office.
