WWVW Productions invites you to review Silly Billy Jilly!, a performance parody lecture of the 2024 television adaptation of Jilly Cooper’s ‘Rivals’. The ‘lecture’ is given by drag comedy characters Dane Sawdust, a disgraced dressage rider, turned creative entrepreneur and Bella F. Ashley, a communist academic. In this lecture they aim to hold famed British author, Jilly Cooper accountable for her ‘crimes against humanity’, (prejudice, misogyny and proliferation of yuppy culture).
Silly Billy Jilly! is the intersection of a live academic essay, surreal performance art and stand-up comedy. This is a solo show, with puppetry, and the performer plays both comedy characters through ‘split drag’, (half of the body is Bella, the other half is Dane). Join us for a very camp, very silly time!
The show is written, created and performed by Georgia Dunn (Dane Sawdust and Bella F. Ashley. Georgia is a proud horse mother and lover of ‘slop’ in film and television. Her fondness for such narratives became drastically tested when she watched Rivals for the first time. Upon watching the series, she started writing the script for Silly Billy Jilly! as an immediate response. The performance is a parody of being ‘chronically online’, influencers in media commentary and ‘trauma dumping.’
Georgia is a PhD student at the University of Dundee and has been writing as Dane and Bella for over two years. Her characters have debuted in comedy nights across Scotland such as Icebreaker (Dundee) and Chunks (Glasgow), The Dundee Fringe is her characters’ festival debut.
Silly Billy Jilly! is directed by Gray Hansen (the co-founder of WWVW Productions). Gray is a co-creative on this project and has supervised the script, sewn costumes and wigs, and made demonic sock puppets.
You can catchSilly Billy Jilly! as part of Dundee Fringe at Sweet @ Keiller Centre on September 15th & 16th from 4:10pm (45mins). Tickets are available through the Dundee Fringe Online Box Office.
