REVIEW: Some Masterchef Sh*t, G+J Productions, EdFringe 2025 ★★★

When Luke and Adam meet in a cafe, their awkward interactions and evasiveness lead us to one conclusion only… that is until the real circumstances of their meeting is revealed. And it is a juicy one… literally.

Strap in, because this one gets freaky. Adam is driven to unspeakable ends when his fiance’s veganism becomes too much to bear. Luke has lost hope in life itself, so anything sounds like a good idea. If only he could make a difference in the world.

Despite its wild concept, Liam High’s script is structured extremely well. There is an excellent sense of gradual exposition throughout the story, never telling us too much, too fast. Not only is it a daring topic to tackle, it is done with some mastery that merges absurdism and naturalism with aplomb.

Our two leads hold the atmosphere of the piece with similar skill. Miller and Freeman have great chemistry, and their comedic timing is spot-on. When you can make the audience laugh with a simple look or gesture, you know you’ve won them over.

The staging leaves a lot to be desired. Having been made up of several black storage boxes, some square, some rectangular, it makes each scene change a massive faff. Though the transition music is fun, there are a few too many moving parts to let us really enjoy it.

Whilst Some Masterchef Sh*t demonstrates ballsiness (iykyk), the concept errs on the side of slightly too WTF. The script does a good job of attempting to justify the ideas presented, however because the ideas are so outlandish, any justification falls short of being enough.

High presents various lenses into queer life, which is a joy to witness. Luke and Adam represent opposing, yet equally valid experiences of gayness, and their effort to congratulate each other for simply existing is a lovely touch.

All this said, this show is truly original. If you feel you haven’t properly suspended your disbelief in a while, then Some Masterchef Sh*t should be your next destination.

Recommended Drink: Oat Milk (trying to be vegan).

You can catch Some Masterchef Sh*t at Jade Studio at Greenside @ George Street on Aug 9 at 17:15. Tickets are available through the EdFringe Online Box Office.
