This production offers a raw and honest portrayal of close female friendships in early adulthood. It tackles the struggles of womanhood, exploring how they affect not just individuals but those closest to us. Through protagonist Alex, the writing presents a nuanced depiction of an eating disorder, revealing the unspoken selfishness that can accompany the illness. After failing to support Bex when she needed her most, Alex shares her story of regret, showing that while mistakes shape us, they do not define us.

Told from Alex’s perspective, the story eventually shifts to Bex’s experience, allowing the audience to empathize with both characters in complex ways. The ending aims to inspire an appreciation for the power and intricacy of platonic love.

Despite its serious themes, the piece is layered with releases of comedy and nostalgia. Throughout Alex and Bex’s journey, familiar characters appear, and relatable university experiences unfold. The narrative transports audiences back to the naivety and recklessness of their twenties.

The media has long covered eating disorders, but often focuses on extreme cases, those hospitalized or visibly ill. Flat 4 speaks for the women whose struggles have become normalised. For those who feel they’re not “sick enough” to seek help but know food and body image are dictating their lives. It’s for anyone whose self-worth has been shaped by a number on a scale or the validation of others. By exploring these themes through the lens of friendship, Flat 4 opens a conversation around disordered eating that has yet to be held.

Catch Flat 4 from the 2nd-24th August (not the 16th) at The Loft at PBH’s Free Fringe @ The Outhouse Bar from 17:00 (60mins). The show is offered free at the point of entry and non-ticketed. More information is available through the EdFringe Website.
