In Making A Show of Myself, I’m on a mission to share a discovery I’ve made: that most people instinctively know how to shape a story but few people consider the fact that the stories we tell are shaping us right back.

So now I’m laying it all on the line to illustrate how understanding the shapes of stories, can sustain us, give meaning to our struggles and bind us to our people.

Sharing some of the most painful, ridiculous and embarrassing episodes of my life, I show how, by turning them into stories, I unearthed an unforeseen gift in each one.

    • Why I decided to become a people smuggler in my forties (it didn’t work out).
    • How I lost my voice and had to navigate the world mute, in my twenties.
    • The tall tales I spun “entertaining clients” in my first job and how I got out of my web of deceit.
    • How my stalwart friend Jean stretchered me through the worst breakup with the worst Bad Boyfriend ever.
    • How my five sisters and I rose up as one, when we were told we couldn’t carry our father’s coffin (you can see this one here).

I’m not just here to entertain – this show regularly makes people cry, too. Mostly, though, I want the audience to leave with the knowledge that they’re the authors of the stories of their lives – and they can hold them up to the light and spin them any way they choose.

You can catch Making a Show of Myself at Just the Snifter Room at Just the Tonic at The Mash House from the 31st July to the 24th August (not the 12th) at 16:35 (60mins). Tickets (£17.50/£12.50 conc.) are available through the EdFringe Online Box Office.
