Julia Sinclair has now officially proven that she can do both: provide deadpan commentary on TikTok and make a room full of Dundonians laugh in a sell-out Fringe show. Setting out to dispel some stereotypes (and graciously create some new ones), the 32-year-old comedian flicks through a meme-filled PowerPoint exploring what it means to be an ageing millennial.
TikTok B*tch is not simply a funny TED talk. The show features music, book readings, silly musings, and maybe even a surprise-sing-along. Despite her self-deprecating jokes, Sinclair controls the room with a warm, self-assured presence, raising deeply human questions through a series of well-narrated personal reflections.
Beyond her relatively new life on social media, Sinclair is experienced in Dundee’s second-hand tech retail scene, which has equipped her with technical savviness and comedic technique. Her comedy uses metaphors drawn from personal anecdotes, reflecting on her changing identities, mixing observations about mental health, neurodiversity, motherhood, and culture – from music to memes.
In between moves between topics in her self-curated slide show, the comedian impresses with her natural engagement with the audience. Throughout, she describes her progression towards becoming with conviction and purposeful humour.
In the end, the room is filled with appreciative clapping. We may not have learned all that much about what it means to be on TikTok in one’s thirties, but we have learned a lot about Sinclair, who is much more likely to be “the best thing to come out of Dundee” than a questionable b*tch on the internet anyway.
The show offers reliably funny stand-up and the opportunity to admire a Dundee comedian with potential. Wherever Sinclair goes in her presentation of sarcastic wit, there is something worthwhile on the other side. Millennial nostalgia scrutinised by a clear-sighted digital native, with heartfelt humour.
