REVIEW: We Had Fun, Emmeline Hartley, Jack Mullings, EdFringe 2026, ★★★★

This production will open your eyes to the neurodiverse experience of delayed trauma in this incredible, complicated tale. 

The writing by Emmeline Hartley and Jack Mullings taken from their BFI short film Keep Breathing unpacks the experience they both faced after it took to the wrong crowd. We were engrossed in the story and the lives of these characters immediately.

Their connection was electric and complete trust shared between both of them to tell this story hits you in the feels. The back and forth of flashbacks does take some getting used to, sometimes if you miss a single line you can feel lost, but you circle back just as fast.

The content warnings are so important in this and with the support of the Survivors Trust, the storylines are explored with such care and incredible talent.

With the addition of movement and intimacy into the story by Carrie-Anne Ingrouille and Rose Ryan morphed into something I didn’t expect. It did take some processing, but it was an incredible addition to the story, mostly performed by Tessa Redman and Emma Houston.

Both lead performances by Hartley and Mullings were incredible. Their passion for this piece is clear, and they understand fully that this is a story that needs to be told: about power, autonomy and surviving. Where the story heads in its climax ties it with a bow and really solidifies the importance of why this story is being told in the first place.

The show has officially partnered with the Survivors Trust to support anyone who has been impacted by the themes. This is a tough but powerful watch for those who have been impacted the content or otherwise.
