Silly and Spacey, a fringe delight that will make you giggle.
Brainrot follows six young astronauts of varying qualifications as they depart into space on a super-computer space ship heading towards the void. On their journey, they become more and more reliant on the space ships artificial intelligence, leading them to lose their critical thinking. It is a funny and unique take on the uprising of AI and technology in modern society.
The group have the energy of a young SpitLip (the minds behind Operation Mincemeat) with the Captain John, played by Lukca Best, taking on a role akin to Ewen Montagu. The writing is genius, jumping between scenes starting and ending on the same line and taking us around the ship.
I did notice that the show began before clearance was given, which as a theatre technician, was a level of chaos that stressed me out. I also was unsure of the plot towards the end of the show, leaving me confused as to what had happened as the show ended. However the playful comedy, enthusiastic performances and general group dynamic more than made up for this.
This show felt as if it was still in its first draft, but in time, I believe this show can comfortably become an absurd masterpiece.
This show is delightfully silly, while still providing an insightful take on AI, and is absolutely worth a watch if you’re in Edinburgh.
Recommended Drink: Pair this with a playful Passionfruit Martini.
You can catch Brainrot until August 16th at the Grand Theatre at theSpace @ Surgeons’ Hall from 16:30 (50mins). Tickets are available through the EdFringe Online Box Office.
