Hello there. It’s ok, I know you don’t know who I am. Nobody does anymore. But you’ve seen my legs. Mid-kick, skirts flying – on a poster that’s hung in every arty living room and gift shop for over a hundred years. Toulouse painted it. He got the credit. I got forgotten.
I invented the cancan. I was the first star of the Moulin Rouge. Princes wooed me with champagne baths. Renoir and Lautrec fought over who got to paint me. And still, I died selling peanuts outside that same building that made me famous, with nobody left to remember my one wild life.
Now, I get to fix that. Not the fairytale version. The real one: the laundress who stole dresses to go dancing, the queer who loved men and women but never got to say so out loud, the mother who buried her son, the drunk, the liontamer, the queen of Montmartre who had it all ripped away. Nobody ever asked me what I wanted. What I felt. But this time, people will listen.
Saint Stella brings me roaring back through live performance, dance, archival projection, and a body that refuses to stay quiet. Fifty minutes of story, spectacle, joy and rage wrapped around one burning question: Whose stories get told, and whose get buried? Come find out what happens when the woman on the poster finally gets to talk.
Yours with love, Louise.
