The Constant Storm is a contemporary performance by Glasgow-based artist Jen Kelly, weaving together clowning, physical theatre, and storytelling to explore womanhood in all its contradictions. Kelly dives into the expectations, pressures, and stereotypes shaping experiences of womanhood across marginalised genders, and those who exist beyond the gender constructs. The work questions binary thinking while pulling audiences ‘directly into the storm’. The result is a powerful, participatory work that questions the recent enhancement of tech and how we reinforce – or resist – the systems pressing on our identities.

After a successful Creative Scotland-funded ensemble version that was developed with the support of Surge and An Tobar and Mull Theatre, Kelly is now bringing a more condensed solo version to Dundee Fringe. ‘With every artist that joins the work and new version we make, the show morphs and develops further. This solo version is my way of exploring the fragility of a single performer, who unveils important topics in front of an audience. And how we can do so in a deep way, but with light-hearted moments’ says Kelly.

Trained at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland, Kelly’s practice is rooted in autobiography, often confronting stigma surrounding gender, mental health, and identity “I’m drawn to the raw, immediate nature of real-time, real-effort performance.” Kelly says. “Performance is how I reclaim space. My work connects through emotion – it’s about the unsayable things, and what happens when we embody them.”

Beyond the stage, The Constant Storm extends into the community. Kelly and collaborator Anna Tiia Sorjonen run regular workshops for those who identify with or are interested in exploring experiences of womanhood and marginalised genders, including non-binary and gender-diverse identities, to explore the show’s themes physically and collectively, creating empowering spaces where performance can express what words alone cannot.

Audiences have called the work “fascinating,” “entertainingly troubling,” “full of anticipation” and “life-reflecting.” Expect a show that is visceral, uncontainable, and unforgettable.
