Beautifully empowering, with a generation defining story.
Saria Callas follows the story, created with a mix of fact and fiction, of the Iranian writer and performer Sara Amini. Recounting her life and childhood as a girl who was taught to be quiet, wear a hijab and obey. A story of power and protest, Saria sings her way through her story just as Maria Callas would. In the present day, Saria is raising her genderqueer child in London, watching them faced gender based opression after she has escaped it, and learning how to accept and support this.
Sara Amini is a star, and gives a deeply touching performance in this piece as she reccounts her girls school antics and her need to fight back against the role she has been taught in the name of womanhood in Iran.
The set design by Mana Sadri Irani and multi-media collaboration, with video direction by Elahe Esmaili, sound design by Parham Bahadoran and Babak Rezvani, and lighting design by Ali Hunter, creates a complete and utter delight. This paired with the production soundtrack that combines Saria’s life and cultures, this show is an incredible construction.
This show is enticing and absolutely worth seeing.
Recommended Drink: Pair this with Red Wine, while you reminice.
Performances of Saria Callas have now concluded at EdFringe 2025.
