Please Note: This show was reviewed by Binge Fringe in 2024, and we were asked to revisit the production. This review aims to build on our previous coverage to include any updated elements of the show.
A joyous musical delight, bringing the queer power of the para=social relationships we have with pop divas.
A Stan is Born! follows Alexis Sakellaris’ queer journey, growing up in rural Germany and the power Divas gave them to live as their true self. It is an hour of the most joyfully queer original music you can imagine, flawlessly performed by Alexis themselves.
The set is created through an endless t-shirts of different legends of pop, from Sabrina Carpenter to Selena, a collection worthy of only the greatest Stan.
This updated version of the show features moments of stand-up comedy from Alexis, a new venture they have been making within the past year, with joyous moments them becoming the pop diva they stan in moments of crisis, allowing the spirit of stardom to guide them through hardship. Reminiscent of shows such as Titanique, this portrayal is so deeply loving and exemplifies the role celebrities play in forming our lives and identities.
Jake Mace’s review from last years production stands up, this is pure, unescapable, authentic Queer joy at its best.
Recommended Drink: Pair this with your favourite Diva’s favourite cocktail, which for me would be Spicy Margarita.
You can catch A Stan is Born! until August 25th at Blether at Gilded Balloon Patter House from 15:00 (60mins). Tickets are available through the EdFringe Online Box Office.
