REVIEW: Daisy Doris May: Big Night Out, Mick Perrin Worldwide, EdFringe 2025 ★★★★★

As I entered the space I was met with cabaret table seats, music, video and an incredible vibe, the video went between various rules for the show, including “NÖ HAVING FUN (withÖut mË)” and I immediately knew I was in for a treat.

The show opened with our first of 3 characters, Hans Off, a trendy partygoer on the VIP (Very Important Posterier) list for the club, until an audience member was selected to play the the Security Guard. Reader, it was me. I don’t know if they saw me coming or I just looked queer enough for the role, but I was handed a script and a security jacket and became a recurring character throughout the piece. Never has a show given me more gender euphoria. I can only apologise for taking off the jacket in between my scenes because it was so so warm.

The show progressed throughout the night at the club, as we see Hans break in and The divine Karen Moonstone get kicked out. Karen plays with the audience, sensing their auras and insulting their exes before it’s time to hide your daughters, because Steve Porter has arrived at the club. Steve rocks up to the club with a bag of cheese to celebrate his best mates stag do, all while looking for love for himself, and I loved him so much. He gave me, the security guard, a really good hug and he threw his cheese into the audience, saying that he had to write a risk assessment about this, so they have to catch it.

The crowd work and audience characters were incredible, perfectly incorporated into the show without ever being made to feel unsafe or unsure, and the show ended with a reference to Romeo and Juliet (1996) as Steve made out with an audience member through a fish tank.

Big Night Out was the best night out you’ll have in Edinburgh this year, it was silly, camp and full of exceptional character work, and for me specifically, the gender euphoria was the best I’ve ever had.

Recommended Drink: Pair this with a fruity little Cocktail, a Herbal Mushroom Tea and a Pint.

You can catch Daisy Doris May: Big Night Out until August 24th at Underground at Assembly George Square from 21:5 (60mins). Tickets are available through the EdFringe Online Box Office.
