In this world premier adaptation a team of diverse, queer, and trans artists (and one straight guy…) take on the often forgotten tale of Iphigenia. She was sacrificed to make way for war, revenge and plunder, but her story begs the question, “What is one girl really worth?” This team of young artists dives into an ancient legend to explore the tendrils of patriarchy that still echo in our world today. How are girls valued and what are they asked to sacrifice for their countries and the men who control their lives?

Iphigenia’s father betrays her: Her mother, Clytemnestra, famously avenges her and an unpredictable Goddess transforms her from a pawn in the Trojan war to a reluctant revolutionary. To take control of her story she has to grab power, defy family and lean into sisterhood. Iphigenia: Dead/Alive is inspired by Euripides two plays, Iphigenia in Aulis and Iphigenia Among the Taurians. It pares the story down to its essence and radically rewrites its ending. Adapted by the ensemble and director, Kittson O’Neill, with original music by Clellan Hirlinger, the production centers the female in its casting, structure and creation.

Change comes not from a Deus Ex Machina, as it did in the original, but from the bravery of a discarded woman and the army of women she did not realize she had. This production is a must see for audiences who want to know how the next generation of feminists are thinking about the past. And the future.

You can catch Iphigenia: Dead/Alive from August 2nd to 9th at Space 3 at theSpace on the Mile from 11:05 (50mins). Tickets (£7 / £5 conc.) are available through the EdFringe Online Box Office.
