This delirium inducing hour of ABBA is the perfect way to round out the day, let alone the Dundee Fringe. In a celebration of disco and the fringe there’s something wonderfully communal that’s been created by Scott Redmond in this small room.
Scott’s dressed in his best ABBA get up, all in white with flares highlighting every limb and a blonde wig to top it off. It’s not a reach to say this is reminiscent of Jesus in the way he is leading his commune through so much ABBA. With a supporting cast joining Scott for each song (often carrying him through) it’s a true reflection of the community spirit that runs the Dundee Fringe.
With a refusal to have learnt the words to any of the songs he’s singing, Scott stands there, phone in hand and a belief that eventually he will find where any of these songs comes in. One that never comes true, but undeterred he continues to try and do his best. He’s aided by his new best friend on the front row, who does his best to help despite often getting it just as wrong as Scott.
Some of the audience had mistakenly come for some high-quality ABBA covers, however their hopes are quickly dashed when Scott not only sings Hung Up by Madonna (it samples ABBA so it’s allowed) they realise and he admits that he can’t really sing. This only adds to the show as they and the rest of the audience just start to join in and the show quickly becomes a group sing-a-long.
Interspersed in between all the ABBA, Scott’s added in a slideshow to help move from one song to the next. In the colours of Sweden’s flag there’s cheesy jokes on every slide, determined to get as many as he can is. Every element is carefully thought through to show you Scott cares about making this show as silly as possible and ensuring you never take any of it seriously. The more you relax into what’s happening around you the more you’ll enjoy every moment of it.
A funny and chaotic love letter to disco, Scott has created something cathartic and brilliant, well worth searching out for next time he plans something equally as insane.
