An outstanding display of unbridled queer talent and comedy. Lachlan Werner’s WonderTwunk is camp chaos like no other.
WonderTwunk follows Jack Hammer, the strongest boy in the world, who performs as a part of a circus created by his father, the weakest man in the world. Jack is so strong that he can lift 10 tonnes and so strong that he can never touch another person for fear of hurting them. He performs 10 shows a day, announcing that he is gay during each and every one, and he can’t imagine a life outside of the circus.
Lachlan Werner is fantastically talented, telling this hillariously written story through drag, clowning and ventriliquism. Lachlan plays all of the roles, all with different voices, and is stunning as all of them. Words cannot describe how stunned I was by Lachlan’s craft.
The piece also made referance to the nature of artists in the current political climate, discussing through the concept of the circus the idea that we all need to be performing top of our game all of the time to survive as an artist under capitalism. I’m not certain if this message was necessarily intended in the absurd comedy of it all, but I for one read that and enjoyed it greatly.
This just might be the greatest show I have seen in Edinburgh this year, undeniable queer art that needs to be witnessed by everyone.
Recommended Drink: Pair this with Strong Liquour, to match the Strong Boy.
Performances of Lachlan Werner: WonderTwunk have now concluded at EdFringe 2025.
