Hot off its 2025 Keep It Fringe award, Roarrr Theatre debuts its fantastical, cross-cultural adventure Here Comes Gudong! — a myth-meets-machinery spectacle for children aged 4+ and curious grown-ups alike.
Join an eccentric crew of animal explorers as they chase the mysterious “Gudong!” rumble across shifting landscapes and ancient legends. What they uncover is as surprising as it is delightful.
This isn’t your average children’s show. Blending live puppetry, Chinese shadow play, real-time video, and an electrifying mash-up of Chinese and British folklore, Here Comes Gudong! conjures a vivid theatrical world where East meets West in the most unexpected ways.
“Think Chinese shadow play tangling with Scottish bagpipes. Chinese Jingwei meets the Loch Ness Monster,” says writer-director Portia Yuran Li. “It’s a riot of mythology and invention.”
The show also champions eco-conscious design. The set features a biodegradable forest inspired by traditional Chinese aesthetics, industrial repurposed materials by designer Effie Yuan Gu, expressive puppets by Jessica Wenjing Ji, projections by Inni Xinyi Yin, and an original soundscape blending mountain field recordings and folk melodies composed by Mingyu Ding. Performed by Mary Emma He, Aidan Harris, Sunny Jie Liu, Mingyu Ding.
Founded in 2023, Roarrr Theatre creates original, mythology-infused theatre and drama therapy-inspired workshops for families. With over 400 families already joining the Gudong journey, this production continues to redefine what family theatre can be — a shared space of play, healing, and cross-cultural connection.
Shh… the “Gudong” sound is back. Join us on a joy-filled adventure across myths!
Catch Here Comes Gudong! from August 4th to 6th at Amphitheatre at theSpace @ Symposium Hall from 10:00 (45mins). Tickets are available through the EdFringe Online Box Office.
