Have you ever heard Cajun Music and Louisiana Creole sounds played by Scots singer Jennifer Ewan and accordionist Kim Tebble? Imagine my delight and surprise when I came across this duo performing their unique music beside the Union Canal last Saturday for a loyal audience of boaters in Linlithgow!
It turns out that Jennifer writes captivating songs about the struggles of a young woman moving to Edinburgh from the West coast, and Kim accompanies her on Cajun box and flute. Jen can sing the Blues too, when pieces like Something Ain’t Right or Are You Ready for the Swamp get folk up on their feet for some creole grooves.
This is a duo made up of a dyslexic singer/songwriter with a gift for original melody and subtle guitar rhythms, Jennifer, and her collaborator, Kim, who is quite obviously obsessed with the music of French Louisiana. Jen sings French Creole pieces like Bonsoir Moreau and Eunice Two Step in French with a very charming Scottish lilt as well as Kim’s Swamp Pop ballad, Every Night. Look forward to dreamy flute playing on more trancy anthems dealing with the problems of being dyslexic in the modern world, like Fly Away.
You can catch The Jennifer Ewan Band: Bonnie Bayou as part of Dundee Fringe at Sweet @ Keiller Centre on Saturday 13th September at 4pm (60mins). Tickets (£10) are available through the Dundee Fringe Online Box Office.
