Astronaut Albright is keeping a big secret from her employers, NASA. She’s a “big space lezzer”, and she’s making history as the first lesbian astronaut to spacewalk. However, her ex-wife Gaia will stop at nothing to destroy her success, and her relationship with their Giant Son, Jimmy.
Wrongfully accused of space-lasering Gaia’s conservatory, the estranged couple begin a feud that takes over the universe. Torn between living out her dream career, or coming home for Jimmy’s recital, Sue Albright is stuck between a rock (Earth) and a hard place (the International Space Station).
This show does everything it says on the tin, and more. It is the perfect fabulous Fringe-y farce, filled to the brim with galactic gags. There are a plethora of hysterical characters, including crystal-loving ex-wife Gaia, spaceship robot T.W.I.N.K, and of course, Brett, our classic hetero space bro.
Robbie Taylor Hunt shines amongst the trio. As the writer of the production, it is a joy to see him revel in his own hilarious writing, performed with copious camp-ness. All three actors are putting in the werk with this show, flying about the stage with a vivacity one can only dream of at this point in the festival.
In a piece that is so well written, the songs do stand out for different reasons. The lyrics seem shoe-horned into the rhythms of each track, feeling a bit bolt-on rather than built-in to the production. There is so much other stupendous stuff going on, thus the musical sections end up secondary to everything else.
But, it is clear that everyone is having a blast (pun intended) onstage, and the energy in the audience is one of raucous enjoyment. For anyone taking a punt on a show at the Fringe this year, Lesbian Space Crime is an easy win, and an unforgettable one.
