It was said by a friend. I said nothing. Worse. I laughed. Why did I laugh?
Meet Kiren. British. South Asian. Indian? Punjabi? Sikh? What does any of that really mean? Through a combination of dance, movement, spoken word, verbatim, lip sync and media, the show offers an insight into the lives, histories, and experiences of South Asians in the UK. Seeking comedy, tragedy, and, above all, connection.
Does Anyone Else Smell Curry? Is a solo physical theatre show, created through interviews exploring various experiences of being South Asian in the UK. Through soundbites and recordings of interviews, the performance covers topics including mental health, beauty standards, culture and heritage.
Interviews began in 2023 when the piece was originally devised for the Omnibus Theatre. In 2024 following far right riots in the UK, the interviews were revisited, reflected, and expanded on. The piece aims to elevate these voices and explore their differences, variety, and connectedness, interrogating our relationship with definitions and identity. We see how one body can live with many voices, constantly shifting, conflicting, and growing.
The show has since received funding from the Keep it Fringe Fund and performed at the Bread and Roses Theatre and a London school.
