INTERVIEW: A Digital Pint with… Daniel McKeon, on Avoiding Catfishing and Unlocking Your Inner Boyboss

Daniel McKeon’s upcoming EdFringe debut comedy hour Boyboss aims to leave no humiliating stone unturned in exploring his efforts to ‘transform failure into a lifestyle brand’. Daniel will tell stories ranging from long-distance relationships to working in one-star pubs to disastrous headshots and more. We caught up with Daniel for a pixelated pint to find out more about how he found the funny in failure.

You can catch Daniel McKeon: Boyboss at Just the Tonic at the Caves from July 31st to August 24th (not the 12th) from 21:30 (60mins). Tickets are available through the EdFringe Online Box Office.

JakeHi Daniel! Tell us about your upcoming hour Boyboss and what inspired the title?

Daniel: Hello! This is my debut hour and surprisingly the longest I’ve spoken uninterrupted for 25 consecutive days. It’s about failure, love and gives you my six-step process in unlocking your inner Boyboss. From my humble beginnings as an unemployed loser, working in one-star pubs, I’ve seen it all and my method works. It’ll also tell you exactly how to avoid being catfished and why you deserve to be loved. It’s proving that failure can be a lifestyle brand and how you can fail too.

Boyboss was the title of a work-in-progress and over the months I couldn’t think of a better name. It’s got two B’s, which I love it’s like “ba boom” or “Bad Boys II”. The only downside is that it makes people think of Boss Baby, which is devastating. I’m not sure if I’ll ever escape that as sadly my face does give baby.

Jake: Tell us about what the audience can expect coming into the show, and what they might not expect about the show.

Daniel: Audiences can expect stories, goofy noises, and on the hotter days, shorts. There’s ups and downs, and we do go on a journey. There are stories from family from childhood, all of them quite humiliating but pruned and tailored for your pleasure. I’d like them to bring at least £5 so I could buy a pint after the show. I’m happy to cough up the remaining £2 and who knows I might buy the next round.

What you wouldn’t expect is the true story of the biggest W of my life and the biggest L of my life.

Jake: What are you hoping the audience might take away from the experience, if anything?

Daniel: I’d like them to describe me as spellbinding if possible. I’m trying to get it going that I’m spellbinding. I want them to look at everything they’ve ever messed up and laugh at it easily. And ultimately, I hope they’re surprised by how much they enjoyed it.

Jake: With Edinburgh Fringe 2025 just around the corner, what are you most excited for?

Daniel: I’m always blown away by how much there is to see and shows you’ll never get to see anywhere else. I’m excited to see what well-known television series is made into a one-man show, I’m hope it’s House MD. There’s so many fabulous comedians debuting this year alongside the regular roster so I’m excited to run around and see as much stuff as possible. I saw Roger O’Sullivan’s show Polarized and it’s so so funny. Also Caroline McEvoy, Rohan Sharma, Alice India and Shalaka Kurup.

Jake: Given the themes of Binge Fringe, if your show was a beverage of any kind (alcoholic, non-alcoholic – be as creative as you like!), what would it be and why?

Daniel: If my show was a drink, it’d be a Pornstar Martini. It’s silly, it’s sweet, it’s fun and technically you get double the drinks for the price of one. If you can push through saying the word pornstar out loud, you can get a hell of a deal.

A reminder, you can catch Daniel McKeon: Boyboss at Just the Tonic at the Caves from July 31st to August 24th (not the 12th) from 21:30 (60mins). Tickets are available through the EdFringe Online Box Office.
