From Trento to Dundee via Avignon and Prague: BOXEUR brings a European story of boxing, memory and resistance.
BOXEUR – an antifascist story comes to Dundee Fringe 2026 for three performances on 16, 17, 18 September.
A boxing ring. Two fighters. Two men caught in the violence of twentieth-century European history whose stories return to the stage to question the present. The Scottish dates mark the latest chapter in a remarkable journey across Europe, receiving awards, international selections and critical acclaim and approaching one hundred performances.
At the heart of BOXEUR are the real lives of two fighters: Eugenio “Smit” Lorenzoni, from Trentino in northern Italy, and Tunisian world champion Victor “Young” Perez.
Born in Italy in 1908, Lorenzoni belonged to a generation of people from Trentino who left their homeland in search of work and a better future. He emigrated to France as Fascism was taking hold in Italy, worked in a factory and began boxing, eventually competing at a very high level. His story opens a window onto working-class migration, factories, socialist movements and resistance to Fascism in interwar Europe. Victor Perez was a Tunisian Jew who moved to Paris as a young man and became World Flyweight Champion in 1931 and 1932. The theatre imagines what History made impossible: a post-war boxing ring on which Eugenio and Victor can finally meet.
On that ring, two biographies confront one another: two experiences of migration and two different forms of resistance to the violence of their time.
