What happens when you follow the yellow brick road… all the way to Australia?
In Tayla in Oz, cabaret performer Tayla Alexander shares her real-life immigration journey from South Africa to Australia, weaving her story through the iconic references and music from “The Wizard of Oz”. But this isn’t just a story about moving countries — it’s about belonging, identity, and the courage it takes to start again.
You don’t have to be an immigrant to relate.
Anyone who has left something behind — a relationship, a hometown, a version of themselves — will see their own reflection in this show. It’s about that in-between space: not quite who you were, not quite who you’re becoming. It’s about missing home while building a new one. It’s about chasing opportunity while grieving familiarity.
With humour, heart, and powerhouse vocals, Tayla explores what it really means to “click your heels” and hope you land somewhere safe. The parallels from “The Wizard of Oz”aren’t just clever — they’re deeply human. We’re all walking our own yellow brick road. We’re all looking for courage, brains, heart… or simply a place to belong.
At its core, Tayla in Oz is a celebration of resilience, reinvention, and finding magic in the unknown. Because sometimes, the most powerful journeys aren’t somewhere over the rainbow — they’re the ones that bring you home to yourself.
You can catch Tayla in Oz from Saturday 7th March until Saturday 21st March at Mezzanine at Plant 4 Bowden at various times (60mins). Tickets are available through the Adelaide Fringe Online Box Office.
