REVIEW: Werewolf, Binge Culture, EdFringe 2026 ★★★★

We are no longer in Summerhall – we are in a government safe house, and there are werewolves on the loose.

We enter Tech Cube 0, ushered in by wardens responsible for our safety, directing us to seats with instruction cards on them. These cards let us know our roles in this production – sceptics, pacifists, timekeepers, and even some werewolves! We learn the rules – no-one in or out, lights off at night, and keep an eye out for wolfish behaviour. But the antidote has gone missing from the medical kit, one of the wardens has brought a weapon in, and someone has stolen the batteries from the radio. Could it be that one of the wardens is… no. Surely they couldn’t be… a werewolf?!

This production delights in the theatrics that the premise allows them, taking everything supremely seriously in the funniest possible way. The complete blackouts are genuinely scary, particularly as the nights progress towards the final terrifying night. All in all, it is a deliciously silly and creepy evening of theatre.

The use of live video feed of the door to the room is exceptional, providing an extra light source to be robbed from us at the right moments, as well as half-glimpses of movement from the corridor that intensify our fish-in-a-barrel feeling, and pull the suspense taught. The lighting design is excellent, illustrating the passing of time and showing us just enough of the scares to let us keep on suspending our disbelief.

For such a well-known interactive game, I would have loved the audience interactive elements to be developed – all input from us was pre-determined by the instructions cards on each of our seats, which are tightly controlled and specific to which seat you are in. This does diminish the suspense a little, and means that most of the seats are guaranteed to have boring tasks on them. There were also no opportunities for us to control the outcome or vote out suspected werewolves, which was a little disappointing.

Drink recommendation: A nice hot chocolate out of a camping mug, to keep you calm overnight!
