REVIEW: Rory Marshall: Pathetic Little Characters, Country Mile Productions, EdFringe 2025 ★★★★

A sketch comedy delight, Rory Marshall takes us through the lives and actions of some of the worlds most insufferable men, from the murderous teachers assistant, to the obnoxious clubber, to the squirrel coded “dating island” contestant. This show is delightfully silly and the perfect dinner time treat.

Going into this, I feared the sketch format would create an unsteady pace, as I have seen at sketch comedies in the past, howver Rory succeeded at not making the show feel jumpy, writing into his work endings and beginnings for each character instead of haphazardly jumping between them. Each character played their role and left, with laughter filling the gaps between scenes. I never felt like there were untold stories or long pauses and I really enjoyed this pacing.

One character I particularly enjoyed was that of a confidence coach, who was trying to convince audience members to go swimming with them by handcuffing them to himself, briefly breaking character to explain an escape in line with the risk assessment.

Rory’s characters were utterly insufferable, they were pathetic men who all of us have come into contact with in our lives, and they were hillarious. I hate to admit that men like that can be so funny, but Rory’s Pathetic Little Characters are comedy gold.

Recommended Drink: Pair this with a Gordon’s Gin, to piss off the bar tender.

You can catch Rory Marshall: Pathetic Little Characters until August 24th at Attic at Pleasance Courtyard from 18:00 (60mins). Tickets are available through the EdFringe Online Box Office.
