REVIEW: Hole!, American Sing-Song, EdFringe 2025 ★★★★★

A pianist and a foley artist walk into a Fringe venue… And perform the quirkiest and most inventive musical you will see all Fringe. This surprise-a-second parable of butt-plugs, religious extremism, and finding yourself will make you shriek, wince, and laugh out loud.

The jumping off point for this musical is a fanatical minister having a prophetic dream that the only way to be safe from the rapture is to wear a buttplug at all times. And he’s right! The only people who don’t get sucked up into space are his small cult and those wearing buttplugs for… other reasons. Years later, anyone who removes their plugs are STILL being sucked into space – and so the Pastor’s wayward son and rule-following best friend are sent off to un-plug the Cincinnati Daddies, a haven for the gay men who are thriving in this new world order, as a means to end the Great Sucking for good, and allow the cult to finally remove their plugs. But – are you supposed to look at your best friends’ nipples through his shirt? Maybe the Cincinnati Daddies have something right after all…

The incredible writer/creators Jake Brasch and Nadja Leonhard-Hooper play each role, from the teenaged protagonists on their quests, to their mothers, to the Daddies they meet along the way. The score is witty, vulgar, and surprisingly touching, with mother-son relationships and queer love at the centre of the story. Brasch plays the keyboard with gusto throughout the largely sung-through performance, and Leonhard-Hooper creates the sound effects, which are crucial to the plot, using plastic cups, a wind-machine, and a vibrater to paint the sonic landscape. The music was genuinely good and catchy (let me know when the album drops!), the dialogue snappy, and the jokes well written. The props, costume, and hair design heighten the comedy to a ridiculous degree – just when you think the visual gags are over, they have another up their sleeve. This bonkers and totally Fringe production is well worth an hour of your time.

A profoundly silly, irreverent, and raunchy rollercoaster with a huge heart, Hole! Is guaranteed to knock your socks off, keeping you guessing from lights up until lights down.

Recommended Drink: Holy water, communion wine, or a 15 year old can of Coca Cola.

You can catch Hole! at Belly Button at Underbelly, Cowgate from 31st July to 25th Aug (not 11th) at 20:20 (70 mins). Tickets are available through the EdFringe Online Box Office.
