Seeksaw is an exploration of the correlations between astrology and technology that unfortunately falls flat.
Seesaw pitches itself as a show analysing the use of social media and AI in the world of astronomy, specifically looking into the world of AI fortune tellers which have taken over social media in China. Unfortunately the show failed to explore any of this, instead simply mentioning the existence of these videos without looking into them.
Seeksaw was a concept that never quite lived up to its pitch, and while there were moments of beauty where the show felt as if it might be coming together, the overall show left me feeling as if nothing had really happened. I was enticed and interested at the pitch of a show with incredibly beautiful illustrated flyer which was about AI on Chinese social media, however the nature of the show had this concept barely mentioned at all.
The performer spoke about astronomy and the use of fortune telling and star charts to predict what a person’s personality would be, interacted with the audience, showed details of her own birth records, but never really touched on or evaluated use of AI. The show felt half-baked and only really began to pick up into any real narrative in the final scene, at which point any character or thematic exploration was immediately stopped by the closing speech of the show.
The pacing felt slow and while there were moments of sound and video design that took hold of the audience and created something exciting, I left the theatre having learnt nothing that I hadn’t already learnt from the show’s pitch. The performer is definitely talented, but across the 40 minutes of this show, I felt as if nothing had happened.
This is an incredibly fascinating concept for a show, and I absolutely believe it could go somewhere, but as it is right now, it feels as if it is a placeholder for a show that doesn’t yet exist.
